Dolly Parton "9 to 5"
Tumble outta bed  And stumble to the kitchen  Pour myself a cup of ambition  Yawnin, stretchin, try to come to life  Jump in the shower  And the blood starts pumpin  Out on the streets  The traffic starts jumpin  And folks like me on the job from 9 to 5  Chorus:  Workin 9 to 5  What a way to make a livin  Barely gettin by  Its all takin  And no givin  They just use your mind  And they never give...

10-Year-Old Won't Pledge Allegiance To A Country... →
malloreigh: blownspeakers: Via Queerty comes a story from the Arkansas Times about Will Phillips, an elementary school student who refuses to say the pledge of allegiance in school because of discrimination against gay people: “I’ve always tried to analyze things because I want to be lawyer,” Will said. “I really don’t feel that there’s currently liberty and justice for all.” After asking...

– Dave Zirin, Women Ski Jumpers Grounded (via TMN) This is a must read. (via pterodactyls) This whole fiasco just seems inane to me. Why the hell not have women’s ski jumping? Isn’t there a women’s branch of just about every other sport already? I’m not inclined to get up in arms about it because I...

Jean-Paul Satre stated that humans differ from human artifacts in that their existence precedes essence.  How might this apply to a discussion of android essence?

The feminization of typewriters and typing techniques was but one piece, unique in its gendered aspects, of a continuing enterprise that seeks to overcome problems of communication such as the threat new technologies pose to communication protocols. The purpose of gendering the typewriting was to insure it as a reliable and faithful means of communication. -(McConnell 2008)

'Feminine Identity'
In Plant’s article, the notion of a ‘Feminine Identity’ is brought up in her discussion of Mead’s research of the industrialization of textiles, which she writes, “shatters the scenery of female identity”.  In the article, Plant discusses a specific sort of work as ‘feminine’ due to its manifestation within a historically gendered labour system (in...

Might the creation of groups like 'Stitchnbitch', in which women make up a majority of group members, act to cement the gender divide? Can you think of any ways that women might interact with one another in a 'female space' that 'transgresses' gender stereotypes, or is this impossible? Does the designation of a group as predominantly 'male' or 'female' inherently produce exclusive conceptions of gender?

Stereotypical Successful Male Traits:
- Aggressive - Competitive - Rational - Tough - Competent - Unemotional How many women that aren’t celebrities are portrayed as strong, successful and  feminine on television or the news in general?  It’s no wonder women need to have a coping mechanism such as becoming the “conceptual man” in the workplace.

Section from Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own
How might this tie in to the Margolis/Fisher article? “The spirit of peace descended like a cloud from heaven, for if the spirit of peace dwells anywhere, it is in the courts and quadrangles of Oxbridge on a fine October morning. Strolling through those colleges past those ancient halls the roughness of the present seemed smoothed away; the body seemed contained in a miraculous glass...

The Sims and IT Expertise
I support Hayes’ statement that The Sims (1&2) can be a possible entrée point for girls to experience the “productive” aspects of games and develop their IT expertise. In this game series, players get to design avatars, house décor, buildings and etc. with built-in tools, as Hayes mentions. In addition, several players, both male and female, go a step further to use their own programming tools...
